AOTOMORI: a bilingual sandal store where customers configure every pair

We designed and built sandal brand AOTOMORI's Japanese and English Shopify store, set up its LINE Official Account and launch social assets, and continue to support the store after launch.

AOTOMORI: a bilingual sandal store where customers configure every pair

7 models and ~1,090 combinations, each showing only its own photos

Store build, LINE setup, launch assets and ongoing support from one team

01

The problem

AOTOMORI's sandals are made to order. Customers choose a model, a sole colour, a strap colour and a size, and across seven models that adds up to about 1,090 combinations and roughly 690 product photos. The store had to let people explore all of that without getting lost, work equally well in Japanese and English, and stay simple enough for a small brand team to run day to day.

02

How we approached it

  1. 1

Structured the catalogue before designing anything: models, collections (Women, Unisex, Kids; Daily, City, Relax) and consistent option names, so every combination maps cleanly to its photos.

  2. 2

Built the store on Shopify with a bilingual structure: Japanese by default, English under /en.

  3. 3

Created the pages a new brand needs to earn trust: brand story, craftsmanship, manufacturing process, materials, size and care guides, FAQ, shipping, returns and the legally required seller information.

  4. 4

Added reviews, a wishlist and a newsletter, set up the LINE Official Account, and produced social media assets for launch.

  5. 5

After launch, moved into ongoing support: maintenance, SEO and content, and day-to-day store operations.

Challenges we faced

Showing the right photos for each combination

Shopify can't filter a product gallery by colour at this scale out of the box. We wrote a small tool that reads the product data and maps every image to the variants it belongs to, and the product page uses that map so choosing a colour shows only the matching photos. Along the way we had to reconcile inconsistent file names (Gray/Grey, Light Pink/Pink). One model, Muse, has 250 variants on its own.

Sizes Japanese shoppers understand

Sizes are converted from EU sizing to Japanese centimetres (EU 38 → 24.0 cm) on both the server and the page, so nobody has to guess.

Two languages with no gaps

Where a product description exists only in English, the Japanese page falls back to Japanese copy instead of showing English to Japanese shoppers.
